Responding to the rural landscape of Clayhill Arts through the Creative Pathways Bursary programme (May-Oct '19).

'Sounds of Somerset' is a series of oil paintings that depict the forms and colours of the surrounding environment onto canvas. Earthy hues filled the works whilst the process was driven by the surrounding sounds, smells and views of the changing landscape.

As a further response to my placement here, I began creating my own pigments using natural materials sourced from the site. Through walking, collecting, drying, grinding and mixing, organic materials formed 'paints' or 'dye'. A few examples of organic matter used include: soils, berries, flowers, leaves and bark. This lead to the creation of several new works but in particular the 'Earth Maps' which have been featured in exhibitions around Somerset since.
